Don't Bite off More Than You Can Chew When Planning to Haul Heavy Machinery

Automotive Blog

Do you need to transport heavy machinery from one state to another? If this is the first time that you have performed this task, you may be beginning to understand its complications and why you need to put a great deal of time and effort into preparation. What are some of the key areas to look at if you want this to go as smoothly as possible?

Vehicles and Trailers

While you may have heavy vehicles within your current fleet, ask yourself whether they are capable of performing this specific task. After all, if the machinery is particularly bulky or has unusual dimensions, you may need extendable trailers rather than standard versions. If you are looking at something with excess weight, you may need a larger tractor unit or sometimes more than one. Don't forget that you will likely need an operator with experience as well to ensure that they can manoeuvre the rig without any issue.

Jurisdictions and Permits

You'll almost certainly want some type of permit from at least one jurisdiction along the way. These regulators will want to see evidence of your preparation and insist that you meet all the necessary legal requirements before the journey gets underway. You must also be sure that the rig can physically drive along the prescribed route without encountering any obstacles. While low bridges can certainly come to mind, you may also run into problems with roundabouts or other sharp corners, where signposts or other standard road furniture may get in the way.

Special Insurance

Talk with your insurance broker and get their advice as well. You may not have standard coverage that will extend to this type of operation, but you'll certainly want to ensure that you are fully insured before you can begin. The jurisdictions in question may also insist that they get sight of the insurance documentation before they give you a final permit.

Security and Operation

Finally, while preparation is everything, attention to detail on the day will be equally as important. Your load will need to be secured to the towing vehicle with the correct hardware, rated according to weight and any likely movement. Further, you will need personnel who know how to secure the load in accordance with proper procedures.

Much Easier

Why not bring in experts instead? This will be much better than taking on all of this work yourself with all the uncertainty that may entail. Get in touch with a company specialising in interstate machinery haulage, and they will bring their experience and expertise to the table.
